Reviews of Brown Voices
At a time when South Asian American young people are navigating a climate of heightened polarization, Brown Voices: South Asian American Experiences in Schools arrives at just the right moment. It provides a window into the trends, concerns, and needs that South Asian students face. And, most importantly, Rice’s book goes further to provide teachers, parents, counselors and caregivers with meaningful practices and ideas that can be used to strengthen multicultural and inclusive classrooms that nurture and support young people.
I wish I had this text when I was building and teaching my Asian American Literature course for Chicago Public Schools. For those following the TEAACH Act, this is a must-read! What makes this book valuable isn’t just the research; Dr. Rice backs it with real voices, so it reads as lived experience as much as scholarship. This isn’t only a book for the classroom; it belongs on the dinner table too. Families navigating these same dual identities at home will recognize their own experiences in these pages. It also gives parents and children a way into conversations they don’t always know how to start on their own. If you are building curriculum, training teachers, raising South Asian American children, or simply trying to understand this community more fully, this is the resource I wish someone had handed me a decade ago. I’m grateful it exists now for the educators and families coming after me.
A must-read not only for South Asian American students and educators, but also for anyone who teaches or works in higher education today. …has brought crucial attention to the complex realities of being a Brown student in American schools.
Reader reviews
As a South Asian American mother… I found Brown Voices to be incredibly insightful and helpful. It helped me better understand how I can, and should, advocate for my children in school, ensuring their individual needs are recognized, their voices are heard, and they have the support they need to thrive.
